For the Fall-Winter 2026–2027 season, the cape takes center stage.
Among the biggest trends for Fall-Winter 2027, the return of the cape is hard to miss. At the same time, fashion houses are showcasing the cape in long or short versions on the season’s most important runways. Chanel, Khaite, Chloé, Hermès, and Balenciaga are bringing this iconic silhouette back into the spotlight.
In fact, its history begins much earlier. As far back as the Roman Empire, the cloak served primarily as a practical garment. Specifically, the multiple layers of fabric provided protection from the cold. At the same time, its imposing silhouette established it as a symbol of power and wealth.Later, the cape found its place in the French royal courts, where it took on even greater symbolic significance. Portraits of kings often depict this connection to power.
The Cape as a Symbol of Female Strength
The big change came in the 1930s. More specifically, Elsa Schiaparelli brought the cape into the spotlight with her “Cosmic” collection for the Fall/Winter 1938–1939 season. That season, the Italian designer presented the “Phoebus” cape, which was entirely embroidered with sequins and gold metallic thread in her signature “shocking pink.”
From that moment on, fashion became a symbol of women’s emancipation, matching the padded jacket or the suit.
